A dream event - The Dreaming Festival 2005

The Dreaming Festival being held at the Woodford festival ste this weekend, is a unique event. Bringing together Indigenous cultures from around Australia and a fair few from overseas, the program had an ambitious 270 performers..

The basis of the entertainment was excellent music. There were several outstanding concerts by Indigenous musicians like Kev Carmody, Ruby Hunter and the Briscoe Sisters, The Stiff Gins kewpt the early Sunday moning crowd enthralled with their seemingly effortless harmonies..

The Hip-Hop group 'Propaganda Klann' took words like 'spaghetti' that the audience threw out and adapted them as the basis of clever rap songs.

TENTS IN THE OPERA HOUSE

Recently showing at the Sydney Opera House was InTentCity, the premier production from Macquarie University’s Department of Indigenous Studies, ‘Warawara’.

Choreographed and Directed by Macquarie University Artist-in-Residence, Raymond D Blanco, the work celebrates the emotions and situations that led to the Tent Embassy being formed on the lawns of the Old Parliament House in Canberra, through modern dance.

At the sold out opening night the dancers took the stage in an emotionally charged performance. The muscular bodies of the dancers and carefully crafted costumes (Jacques Tchong) told the history and story of the politically turbulent 1970’s.

The dancers combined traditional Aboriginal dance steps with modern dance.

Explosive music with lots of drums and rhythm allowed the dancers to use the full space of the theater to display the passionate cause of social change.

The final song was the song was one of Australia’s ‘unofficial anthems’, Men at Work’s ‘Down Under’, re-recorded by Melbourne's Propaganda Klann, with a more elctro spin to it. This laid emphasis on the words of the song and really sent home the message of InTentCity.

“...The messages and meanings in the show are so deep and powerful, that it is something that is going to stay in your head and make you think for awhile....I can see myself at 4am waking up and thinking about it and understanding it more...”

MONEYSHOT SOUNDTRACK - Tomahawk Pictures

'...... After a long and arduous production history, the local comedy Moneyshot is finally upon us. Set within the porn industry, it’s a randy romp more in the tradition of Alvin Purple than Boogie Nights.
Fast paced and hectic, the film has a soundtrack to match.
Working as a great showcase for local musical talent in the techno and funk area, Moneyshot is filled with hyped up tunes. Cut through with bites of funny, borderline-profane dialogue, the songs are equally raunchy:

Propaganda Klann’s “1211” bangs through with the chorus, “We’re all just hung up on our erections” over a fast-pumping techno beat, ... it probably won’t find its way into the collections of the average Britney fan. As well as the saucy, slightly ribald dance flavours, there are also some more sensitive cuts in the shape of TC Wright’s “Another Decision” and Wingspan’s “Amazing Place”.

A great collection, and a great introduction to some exciting local talent. For more soundtrack reviews, pick up the latest copy of FILMINK Magazine, available in newsagents now for just $4.95. Erin Free - Filmink Magazine

'... indigenous social tones...inspired sonic artscapes...evocative!..' - Timeoff

'.... a terrific live at the Wireless...' - Richard Kingsmill - JJJ

'.... ancient sounds combined with the rhythms of new technology, smart lyrics and deadly production values to result in some of the newest amd best contemporary music currently being laid down...' - Koorimail

'.... Propaganda Klann have developed their own style over the last two years, and have consolidated a genuine Australian expression ...' - Paul Stewart

Jump To Love - Christine Anu - Nov 30, 2000 - A flamenco guitar riff and some dreamy vocals team up with a solid house beat for Christine Anu's latest dance orientated effort. The song has a very clean sound. It is definitely designed for a pop / dance crossover crowd but it is light enough not to offend anyone's ears.
The L'more mix has a good tribal feel to it that might get it some airplay in the good clubs whilst the Propaganda Klann put a freestyle percussive mix on to please the homies.
If you occasionally find yourself dancing to a bit of Kylie then you'll dance to this tune also. ...' - ChaosMusic.com

HOWZAT! News - Jeff jenkins
Propaganda Klann, Gough, Christine Anu And 1211
When Howzat! first came across Propaganda Klann last year, we asked Cameron Goold – beats, raps, programmer geek, sound twister, founder – to describe the collective’s sound. He said: “It’s a loop-based hybrid: hip-hop meets jungle meets pop.” The new Propaganda Klann single, 1211, is a melodic slice of powerful electronica. Not sure what it’s about. Is the lyric: “We’re all too hung up on our erections”? When Propaganda Klann last appeared – late last year with their republic anthem Mr President – the lineup included Quinn Gardener (ex-Defryme) and Tony Kopa (ex-The Truth) out front, with Craig Harnath (ex-Kids In The Kitchen) and Mark Gray (ex-Wa Wa Nee) on bass. Craig remains an integral part of the project, recording, mixing and co-producing the track, but the PK lineup is now Quinn on vocals, Horsehead’s Scott Kingman on guitar, Rexx Fernandez on bass, and Cam on “everything else”. The single (out through Hothouse, www.hothouse.net.au) also includes the PK remix of Christine Anu’s latest single, Jump To Love. And the final track is a phone call from Gough Whitlam, thanking Cam for sending him a copy of Mr President. “We like it very much indeed,” Gough says, “(Don’t be) discouraged by the referendum result.” Cam is touring with Christine as her musical director and drummer. When he gets back to Melbourne, he plans to continue work on the PK LP.

Hang On A Sek top
Date: 8-Nov-2000
It’s been a big couple of months for those acts you can’t categorise, you know, the ones where music journalists bring out the words “hybrid” and “fusion”. We’ve had the Crazy Baldheads, Resin Dogs, Pre_Shrunk, and Propaganda Klann. And now Sek have appeared with their debut album,........

Magnifying murri music

In recent years, Indigenous music has rightly gained the attention it deserves from festival promoters across the nation. Anyone who caught The Warumpi Band at last year’s Big Day Out could testify to their power on the day. Without doubt, their inclusion on the bill helped open eyes to their music, and that of the indigenous community.

The same can be said of last year’s Livid, where the mix of Coloured Stone, Propaganda Klann and our own Native Rhyme Syndicate demonstrated the diversity of Australian indigenous music.

Hip-Hop with a refreshing pop twist
The song was tight and well produced. It had a hip-hop element as far as the beat was concerned. The singing reminded me a littel of G Love but maybe a little more poppy. Overall it was a decent song. I would run out and buy right away!

Saturday morning theme song.
I like it. Your performance is excellent and the arrangement is pretty tight. If I were to market to a regular hip-hop audience, I'd make a few changes, but as a song, I think it would fly as is.

The President formerly known as 'The Artist'
Prince, is that you? Mixing up new grooves here at the end of 1999? Smoooth groove, and if lead vocals had a little more energy it could be rockin'!
Some 'yo brother' Aus-dance hip hop trippy beats, with half-sang, half rapped vocals that turn on those republicans who just wanna be President so they can "Launch a ship, open a bridge, raid the fridge...." Kinda cool.... but can't overly tell if they're Yes or No voters.....so long as they're not James Blundell.
And to think i liked Way Out West....shame!

PRESIDENTIAL PROPAGANDA

Former Kid in the Kitchen pops up on the Icecream Hands album, playing keyboards on Gasworks Park. Now Craig has a new band , Propaganda Klann, with another refugee from a major Australian band, singer Quinn Gardener (Defryme). Propaganda Klann had the distinction of opening this years Livid Festival. The Australian's music critic called them "Melbourne grunge-rockers" .

The group's debut single, Mr President (on Edison Records), aint grunge rock. It's more a hupnotic slice of pop, with some twisted programmed sounds. Timely lyric, too "I wanna republic now/And i wanna be the President". Good Stuff.

INPRESS - HOWZAT - Jeff Jenkins - 13.10.99

" I wanna republic now, and I wanna be the President......" This timely track wisely ignores the millenium and aims for the upcoming referendum, questiioning the motives of those whose Republican support may have more to do with their chances of becoming the big cheese than anything else.

Clever political satire, made palatable by Craig Harnath's crunchy production and a knowing sense of humour.

INPRESS - SINGLED OUT - Anthony Horan - 13.10.99

No time for wanky opening paragraphs, so lets get straight to the bands. I got to the showgrounds nice and early and managed to catch the day’s very first group Propaganda Klann, a bunch of lads from Melbourne who were big on grooves and distinctly Australian themed raps. A combination of good time funk ‘n roll and indigenous/political issues got the day off to a spirited start.

RAVE Magazine - issue #408 - Matt Thrower - 6.10.99

" At the opposite end of the schedule, Melbourne Band Propaganda Klann had the dubious distinction of opening this years event at 10.45 am; not a time when one is particularly keen to see an unknown band from Melbourne perform.

To their credit the band could be spotted in the crowd late into the afternoon, trying to convince as many punters as possible that what they had missed was their loss'.

The Australian - Iain Sheddon - Livid Review - 4.10.99

" Propaganda Klann might not be the biggest name at Livid, but don't be suprised if they're the act everyones left talking about weeks after the event."

Time Off - Matt Connors - 29.9.99

" Propaganda Klann - Hip shaking, lip smacking grooves with a heart of satirical rhetoric.....Keep an ear an eye out for the single Mr President..."

RAVE Magazine - Emma Jane - 29.9.99

"Yet another new Australian outfit to watch out for, Progaganda Klann are possibly the first truly Australian sounding rap based outfit, melding a strong tradition of Aboriginal/Australian music with kicking rhythms, production know-how and political/social clout. The A-side 'Wik'D' in particular hits all the right notes, creating a highly individual sound by avoiding the usual pseudo American approach to the genre."

Capital Q (Brisbane) - 20.11.98

"Propaganda Klann's bio. says they have 'too much to say' and one listen to their 'Feet on the Land' single (TWA) proves that true. With song titles like "Wik'D", this is one duo who have been to the Peter Garrett school of speaking up about what pisses ya orf about Astraylia - and passed with flying colours. Losts of raps about the '10 point plan'.....not easily digestible stuff."

3D World (Sydney) - 30.11.98
