Report by Shannon Duffin For Aborignial youth in the Cairns region in far north Queensland activities for local youth tend to few and far between. So a recent national youth week initiative, the Spin A Yarn Conference provided the opportunity for over a 100 members of the Kuranda Aboriginal community to participate in the production of a media kit for use in the community.
Kuranda Aboriginal community leader Uncle Lance Riley said exposure of the local youth to workers in the indigenous media sector, such as Internet providers, photojournalists, and newspaper editors would help the community in the future. The local bama (Aboriginal) youth are very talented, so with them working with the media facilitators, it will enable them to make the most of their talents in music, art, dancing, education and sport, Mr Riley said. Youth delegates, aged 12 to 25, participated in workshops looking at the influence and the potential of the Internet, photojournalism, radio broadcasting, media awareness and the production of the newsletter. One of the delegates, and co-editor, Shannon Duffin, said the workshop was much-needed in the area to tap into the massive pool of talented musicians, artists, dancers and sportspeople in the town. Weve had a chance to learn about and use new technologies during the weekend, and if a long-awaited youth centre comes about, we can use our new skills, networks and connections with mob down south, Ms Duffin said. Comments from the youth delegates who attended the Spin A Yarn workshop - Hello everyone, my name is Amy Brim, how are you. I hope you had a great weekend because I did. It was a nice hot day and we had some music going off our requests. For a youth like me I would like to see more things happening such as the Spin A Yarn workshop.
Hi my name is Terriceta Salam, I am a Torres Strait Islander. I do voluntary work at Bummera Bippera Media. I really enjoyed today a lot especiall when we had the group talk earlier in the day. I thought it was really interesting listening to everyones opinion on how today went, their background and what they want to happen up here in Kuranda for the youth, as there is hardly anything here in Kuranda and in Cairns for the youth. My mother told me that if I work hard I can achieve and do anything to fulfil my goals. Hello, how are youse, my name is Tylah Brim. I had a great day the day I went to the workshop, it was great. As a youth I reckon Kuranda should have more like them. | News | Music | About us | Pics | Links |
